My own basketweaver

A whole new Yucatecan art form opened up to me this weekend while we were staying in the Mayan village of Tinum....basketweaving! And basketweavers. (I wouldn't want anyone to think I would be weaving baskets myself.) Actually, there are only a few weavers left who practice the art of weaving a woody vine called "bejuco." The vines can only be woven when wet. This basket weighs about 5 kilos now but will get lighter as it gets drier.

When dry, the baskets are most often attached to a head strap and then used to collect corn and squash from the fields. Once again, I wouldn't want readers to worry that I will be strapping on this basket and heading to my corn and squash field. I plan on filling it with my diminishing copies of magazines and library books. It is absolutely beautiful. I have a few more on order.

Thanks for the image of you hauling your dinner home across the fields -- it made a good start to my day....and the basket is lovely.

so you're going to practice your debutante walk with a basket of books and magazines on your head?
